There is / There are
There is y there are son formas impersonales del verbo to be (el sujeto es there, no una persona). Ambos se traducen por "hay".


  • There is + a + nombre contable singular
    • There is a fork on the table. (Hay un tenedor sobre la mesa.)

  • There is + some + nombre incontable
    • There is some bread in the basket. (Hay pan en la cesta.)

  • There are + some + nombre contable plural
    • There are some biscuits in the box. (Hay galletas en la caja.)

  • There are + two, three... + nombre contable plural
    • There are two cats on the roof. (Hay dos gatos sobre el tejado.)
    There isn't y there aren't son las formas negativas, por lo tanto se traducen por "no hay".

    There isn't any tea in the teapot. (No hay té en la tetera.)

    There aren't any computers in my classroom. (No hay ordenadores en mi clase.)

    Is there...?y Are there...? son las formas interrogativas y se traducen por "¿hay...?".

    Se responden afirmativamente Yes, there is/ are y en negativa con No, there isn't/aren't.

    Is there any butter in the fridge? Yes, there is. ¿Hay mantequilla en el frigorífico? No.

    Are there any new films at the cinema? No, there aren't. ¿Hay películas nuevas en el cine? No.
