By compiling audiovisual material from a variety of sources, she presents us with a series of connections between images that are conveyed through painting and displayed in such a way that, like mirrors or echoes, they dialogue with each other as independent fragments of a narrative which is suggested but never completed, leaving the spectator to fill in the blanks.

Her work thus displays the attitude of a style of painting that seeks to redefine and (re)build itself as an integral part of the visual culture in which it is immersed and with which it forms a cognitive system that produces meaning.

In Dramatis personae we find blurred boundaries, the limits of representation and the very interpretation of images, suggestive, fragmented frames, nods to photography and film, collective imagery and even family photo albums as material sources for painting, characteristics that define the output of this artist.

The pictorial work in this exhibition runs parallel to other proposals which, since the days of early avant-garde cinema, have attempted a certain stylisation of reality in order to test the limits of narrative plausibility. Through painting, this project raises questions about the very principles that govern the construction and perception of the image in our "hyper-visual" contemporary world.

The exhibition catalogue features an essay by Víctor Borrego entitled "See without Looking, Look without Seeing".

María Dávila

Málaga, 1990

María has a degree in Fine Art from the University of Málaga, where she was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Prize (2013) and, having completed her Master’s degree in Production and Research in Art at the University of Granada (2014), she is currently combining her artistic work with her PhD thesis.

Her work is centred on painting, on a relationship with the environment from a contemporary perspective which leads her to seek new ways of reformulating pictures in their evolution as images. In February 2013 she held her first individual exhibition in the Centro Cultural Provincial in Malaga, entitled "Después, el silencio" (After, silence); almost two years later she held "Anagnórisis-La Trama "(Anagnorisis-The Plot), her second individual exhibition, in the exhibition hall of Málaga’s faculty of Fine Art. She has participated in collective exhibitions and was awarded First Prize in the MálagaCrea de Artes Visuales (2014) and the VI Premio de Pintura de la Universidad de Málaga (2012) and was finalist in the Premio Internacional de Artes Plásticas “Obra Abierta 2014” (Plasencia, 2014) and the Premio Internacional de Pintura Focus-Abengoa (Seville, 2014).
