With a project considered to be a ‘Work in Progress’, Mercedes Pimiento, reflects on the way in which we occupy space and relate to our immediate environment: the process whereby we transform a space into a place. It is a heterogeneous project in which we find artwork that aims to invade or occupy the exhibition space as a whole, transforming it to create a unique site in which the projects are interrelated and related to the spectator at different levels.

When we observe each of the pieces that make up the exhibition, our attention is drawn to certain elements such as the size of the works, the type of materials used –construction materials that nevertheless continually refer to the organic and natural-, the fact that they are handmade reproductions of objects that can be found every day (objets trouvés), and that each piece has a constructive or architectural nature.

Scale also plays a key role in the artist’s project, since it establishes a direct relationship between the size of the work and the human dimension, which means that the perception of the piece varies based on this relationship. However, proportion is not always obvious in her work, since it deliberately creates a space in which the spectator does not have all of the information. Likewise, Mercedes Pimiento creates small facilities or miniatures, which open up different possibilities of perception to the spectator.

The concept of “refuge” is very present in the exhibition through the architectural shapes of the pieces and, for the French writer Henri Bachelin (France, 1879), is the primary function of inhabiting. This idea of exploring refuge, the ephemeral, the removable, the fragile yet valuable, is what interests the artist and what connects us with the title of the exhibition, ‘Handle with care’.

The catalogue that accompanies this exhibition contains the Mariana Hormaechea text ‘El mundo es mi imaginación' (The world is my imagination).
