DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

A very attractive, gentle path of high natural value which passes by the well-known Prados del Rey and along the left bank of the beautiful sprawling Fonfría ravine. There are impressive views to be enjoyed while traversing this spectacular high mountain route.

The path is ideal to do in spring and autumn, when the Mediterranean high mountain forest is in its greatest state. Nevertheless, neither does it lose its beauty in winter. Covered in snow, it inevitably becomes more technically difficult, as a result of accessibility and the track itself.

Starting at the Prados del Rey, on the left side, the route gains height until it reaches the Pozo de la Nieve hill. Here there are impressive views over all of the meadows, surrounded by great peaks such as the highest one found in the Sierra de Baza Natural Park , El Calar de Santa Bárbara, which looms over the meadows at more than 2,200 metres, creating a picture-postcard of very high landscape value.

The Prados del Rey are one of the most visited areas of this natural park, featuring high mountain meadows covered in Scots pines that, despite being relatively small in size, are of the utmost interest, not only in a botanical sense but also scenically, especially in spring and at the beginning of summer, when the green Alpine meadow shows off its luscious splendour.

As the route gains height, there are sometimes very small lagoons or ponds, with their appearance usually being in the wetter months. They invariably provide some very beautiful photograph opportunities. Equally, the reason for the high botanical wealth of the area is due to the fact that it is home to a great number of plants of interest, typical of the Borreguiles part the Sierra Nevada Natural Area, such as the Sierra Nevada clover.

After the first hill, the path leads down a gentle descent to the end of the route, but still with a series of beautiful landscapes. Leaving behind the Prados del Rey and the Calares de Santa Bárbara and La Boleta, the impressive Fonfría ravine opens up ahead and the path continues along its left bank, looking out at its scenic and natural grandeur at every twist and turn; an ongoing natural viewpoint.

The ravine is home to the well-known Fonfría pine forest, located near the spring of the same name. It is one of the shaded areas with the greatest botanical and scenic value in the Sierra de Baza, as it hosts a stronghold of Eurosiberian forest made up of wild pine forest, and it is the most southern of its kind in Europe. The Fonfría area, being relatively well-protected from the wind, has allowed the growth of this magnificent pine forest. The vast majority of the La Fonfría pine forest is autochthonous, except for the valley floor, which was intensely repopulated in the late sixties and early seventies. Impressive views of the right bank of the Fonfría ravine can be enjoyed along the way, with huge cliffs and natural shelters located on the sunny side of La Boleta.

Shortly before the end of the route, there is the chance to enjoy the leafy pine forest of La Fonfría and an interesting natural refuge used to protect livestock, called Cueva del Zanahorial, which translates as “Carrot Cave”.

Upon reaching the end of the path, there is the reward of a clear view of the wide Collado del Resinero pass that lends its name to the path. The pass separates two peaks of more than 2,000 metres; the Calar de los Tejoletos, on and along which this path traverses throughout the route; the other, up ahead, is the Picón de Gor.

This peak is the highest and westernmost peak of the Sierra de Baza, receiving its name from the town of Gor, the area to which it belongs.
