DESCRIPTION

El Cerrillo del Plomo was one of the most productive mines during the Roman period, constituting one of the most important deposits in Spain for the extraction of galena, both for its production and for the quality of the mineral extracted. Galena is a mineral from the group of sulfides from which lead and silver are extracted.

Under the rule of the Roman Empire, this silver was shipped to Rome, while lead was used to make coins, pots, and to coat pipes and roofs. In the middle of the 20th century, the miners, known as sacagéneros, removed the contents of this hill in search of any remaining lead that the Romans had not extracted.
