SIERRA PELADA - Ventana del Visitante
The Sierra Pelada and Rivera del Aserrador Natural Park is located in a region historically linked to traditional forestry activities, especially those related to the use of wood. In recent decades and particularly since the declaration of the protected area, the management of this territory has turned towards the conservation of its resources and the protection of its most representative values, among which the presence of one of the most important colonies of black vultures in Europe stands out.
The Sierra Pelada path offers a route on which you can see most of the characteristics that can be found in this area. Throughout the itinerary, the visitor travels a small section of the path to the Cumbre del Mojonato, you can enjoy wide panoramic views of the Andévalo region and the Mining Basin that extends to the south. Towards the other side, the visitor will be able to glimpse parts of the old town of El Mustio, a rural settlement created by the old forest administrations to house the workers employed in the forest and their families. This town had most of the services foound in traditional urban centres including a school, church, cooperative store and a medical dispensary.
The path runs under the shade of pine and eucalyptus trees that constitute the dominant species of the landscape and show the forest use that has characterised these mountains. Under cover of these trees, you can see species of the climactic undergrowth: strawberry trees, white heather and narrow-leaved mock privet whose greater or lesser abundance fluctuates depending on whether we are in shadier more humid areas or drier and more sparse terrain.
At the end of the itinerary, the path goes around a hill where there is a forest fire watch post which is the well-known "El Centinela" tower from which you get unbeatable views that, on clearer days, extend to the sea. The path ends a few metres from this point in front of a small esplanade where there is a small viewpoint along with its corresponding informative sign.
