DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This viewpoint shows the Fuente de Piedra lagoon, one of the largest saline lagoons on the Peninsula. In its large closed basin covering 15,000 hectares, streams and groundwater drag saline materials inland (carbonates, clays, gypsum among others) to the lowest level, creating this wetland. Of particular note are the extensive waters which are shallow due to the scarce relief and exposure to the wind, it has a characteristic border of vegetation and a marked seasonal character. Irregular rainfall changes the water level, reaching half a meter in a normal spring, while in summer the water evaporates, drying up the lagoon and the concentrated salts crystallise and form a peculiar salt crust. In rainy years, the lagoon is more than two metres deep and can conserve water throughout the summer.

The presence of aquatic birds and vegetation also varies. With a high water level (>1 metre), the lagoon is home to many swimming and diving species (ducks, common pochards, grebes ...). In periods with medium or low water levels (<50 cm), waders predominate and flamingos occupy the entire lagoon, reaching as many as 40,000 (50% of the Western Mediterranean population). In dry times, the protagonists are steppe birds. The optimal period to observe the birds (more than 170 different species) is between November and July.

Car park not guarded. Do not leave valuables in the vehicle.
