DESCRIPTION

The ascent to Alto del Bujo is a traditional route that can be divided into two clearly differentiated sections. On the one hand, the first part allows the user to enter the open oak woodland (dehesa) whose traditional uses (livestock, firewood, pastures, etc.) are clearly visible as soon as we start the route.

These first sections ascend slightly, and the is path always flanked by old stone walls that border the fields where holm oak groves dominate the landscape. These are high and dense mountains that are approximately 80% covered by a regular or semi-regular structure of trees of no more than three different classes of age.

The path ascends through the shady area of the Sierra del Buho and as the route continues as the ground level rises, the holm oak forest is accompanied by more demanding elements such as cork oaks, strawberry trees and terebinths. The state of the surface of the trail varies from one section to another, from concrete areas in the vicinity of the town to traditional cobblestones in other sections, these are interspersed with others more deteriorated sections where the path has eroded due to the effect of water and high usage.

You will pass several typical elements of the surrounding livestock farms (such as sheepfolds and water troughs), and after about two and a half kilometres, you'll reach the Collado de la Herradura. From this point we enter the second section previously alluded to as the path follows the southern slope of the mountain range, it is open and exposed causing a notable change in the vegetation which is now dominated by much sparser and more resistant species.

The pastures are replaced by olive groves and the forest vegetation is reduced to the shrub layer and scrub with kermes oak, mastics, white rockrose, Montpellier cistus, thyme and rosemary colonising much poorer quality, shallow and stony soils.

In this area the trail runs on a firm track, suitable for the road traffic around the Alto del Bujo hill, where we can see the forest fire watch post. On the other side of the road there is a spectacular panoramic view of the Rivera de Montemayor valley that runs from the foot of the mountains.

The path continues parallel to the path and takes us to a small picnic area with fountains, picnic tables and barbecues. A few metres from there we find the Alto del Bujo viewpoint, the end point of the route.
