DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This new trail is almost 4 km long. and being circular it can be done in both directions. It starts at the corner that gives access to Camping Despeñaperros, next to the old section of the N-IV, on the outskirts of the town of Santa Elena. It presents a low difficulty being practically flat, except a section of about 400 meters where a small slope is overcome
barely 5%, so it is suitable for walking with small children.

If taken in a clockwise direction from the starting point, the trail quickly enters a pine forest where there is mainly stone pine mixed with some resin pines, cypresses and holm oaks. The first 350 meters of trail run through a wooded area with abundant shadows and free of scrub, as it constitutes the campsite's fire safety zone. This makes this section an ideal place to hunt for mushrooms in autumn.
The trail continues for another 170 meters through a more intricate area of Mediterranean vegetation in which rosemary and rockrose abound under the trees, which It leads us to a spectacular panoramic viewpoint suspended over the old N-IV road. From the viewpoint you have an unbeatable view of the Natural Park, since the path is located at the southern end. The 180 degree panoramic view allows you to see the entire Despeñaperros mountain from Collado de la Estrella, Puerto del Rey, Salto del Fraile, Navavacas, Castro Ferral Castle and following the rope of Collado de la
Star to the East, you can see the Despeñaperros Pass and to your right the Collado de los
Jardines from where the park looks at Aldeaquemada.
Leaving the viewpoint behind, the path runs 900 meters along an old track out of wood
completely flat through a lush mixed forest of pines, cypresses, holm oaks and cork oaks, where once again the noble scrub of the Mediterranean mountain gives a touch of naturalness to the visitor who loses the notion of the distance to the town but, let's not forget, it is a little over 1 km away.
At the end of the track, the path turns sharply to the right to return to Santa Elena
using a wider forest path, which also runs under a canopy of stone pines of great size. It is from that point where the only difficulty of the path is found, because for
four hundred meters it goes up a slight slope with a slope of around 5% to reach the limit of the Park where it is done again. totally flat. The final section runs through a transition zone between the forest and agricultural areas, bordering the southern perimeter of the Despeñaperros campsite, passing through its access door and ending right where it started.
The trail shows the main attractions are its proximity to the town of Santa Elena, its friendliness, the abundance of shadows for hot days, the great botanical biodiversity and, above all, the privileged views from the viewpoint that invites you to leave fly your imagination contemplating this unique landscape and, why not, reflect on the countless travelers from so many cultures who have used this natural passage between the plateau and Andalusia.
