DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The path runs through open oak woodland (dehesa), the most characteristic forest environment, both in terms of landscape and surface area of the Cardeña y Montoro Natural Park (covering 40% of the surface area).

Men from these mountains and from other parts of Andalusia, began to transform the old Mediterranean forest 100-150 years ago, thinning out the trees and eliminating part of the dense scrub to allow for a greater development of pasture land to integrate agricultural, livestock and forestry uses into the land. These men were known as "materos", and they shaped the landscape to be able to take advantage of the resources of the mountains, until they formed one of the youngest and well-preserved open oak woodlands (dehesas) in Andalusia. A way that allows the well thought-out balance between the intervention of man and nature.

This path connects with the path that leads to Azuel, Aldea del Cerezo and the Camino del Carrizo y el Reloj signposted hiking trail, thus creating circular routes back to Cardeña. This routes are highly recommended to do by bicycle or on horseback.

The trees that we will find along the path are mostly made up of holm oaks, cork oaks, Valencian oaks and ash trees. Additionally, there is a very dense, small grassland with annual and perennial species, these trees have a great capacity for regrowth due to the action of cattle and are the most important resource in these pastures. The most common species are the bluegrass and the subterranean clover. The presence of scrub in the pasture depends fundamentally on the intensity of grazing, being more scarce with high degrees of grazing.

Throughout the route you can see great biodiversity with fauna such as hoopoes, azure-winged magpies, wrens, and rabbits among other species. Take into account that in the pasture there are around 60 species of nesting birds, more than 20 mammals, and the same number of reptiles and amphibians.
