The Natural Park of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama suggests three different routes to reach La Maroma, each ascending different slopes of the great mountain. La Maroma is the largest of the peaks of the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountains and the highest point in the province of Malaga. The route from Casa de las Nieves is the one that goes up the southern or sunny slope, from Canillas de Aceituno.
The landscape is rugged and vegetation is sparse. After an hour of ascent, the slope softens and you reach the Rábita fountain, a small oasis in which the atmosphere becomes much more refreshing and welcoming. Further on, a steep slope leads to the top. The lack of protection and the fierce cold make it a tough test in winter.
The name of the trail is taken from a traditional path taken by the 'neveros', the intrepid men who were in charge of conserving the snow and transporting it great distances.
Until not too long ago, enjoying snow or ice in summer was an almost impossible luxury in most of the Andalusian geography. But there were those who could pay for it, and there was also an ingenious and complex set of logistics capable of providing it. Thus, on the heights of the snowy mountain ranges, wells were built and chasms were used to gather snow, in which it was packed and protected with branches and earth. When the thaw had already erased the white colour of the peaks, the snow still remained in the wells, and thus, in midsummer, it could be extracted and transported by mule to wherever it was demanded and could be reached in a race against time and all kinds of difficulties, since no other more perishable and less accessible merchandise can be imagined. To avoid the destructive effects of the heat, the 'neveros', who worked in this trade, had to travel at night.
There are references to the snow industry as far back as Arabic times, but it really took off during the 17th century. In the Ensenada Cadastre in Canillas de Aceituno it is mentioned that there were 5 snowdrifts in the Sierra Tejeda belonging to the minims of the convent of San Francisco. In 1837, Boissier again testifies to the continuity of the activity.
The main road that reaches Canillas de Aceituno is the MA-4106, which comes from the A-356 about 6 km north of Vélez Málaga. The path begins in the centre of the town, next to the Town Hall.
