The presence of iron in the rocky hillside was the reason for the mining activity that took place here from Roman times until the last century. This activity left a landscape of colours and unique shapes, featuring needles, corridors and limestone pavements. It owes its beauty to limestone rock that suffered partial erosion from rain and snowfall, creating this spectacular karst that today is popular with climbers.

Some infrastructures depict its ming past, such as the old railway line that linked the mining sites with the Los Prados-Cazalla station. Its restructuring as a “via verde” (greenway) trail in the Sierra Norte of Seville allows you to walk it or ride a bike there. The route starts in the old mining town, from the Casa de los Ingleses, which was the residence of the engineers and mine managers who came from Scotland at the end of the 19th century. This historic building has been restored in order to install the Cerro del Hierro information point .

To really discover this natural monument, there is nothing better than walking the Cerro del Hierro trail, a short, two kilometre route that ventures into the galleries and tunnels dug into its rock face.

Just nine kilometres from Cerro del Hierro is the Historic-Artistic Site of the town of Constantina. Its streets and monuments are packed full of history, not to mention its exquisite traditional cuisine and famous anis. On the outskirts, the El Robledo Visitor Centre is informative on the Sierra Norte Natural Park and visitors can find out about the most interesting areas and routes.
