DESCRIPTION

The 1972 Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO established that certain places on Earth with “exceptional universal value” belong to the heritage of mankind as a whole,.

Doñana was inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites in the category of Natural Asset in 1994. The current area of the Doñana National Park, recognised as a World Heritage site, is 54,251.65 hectares.

Doñana occupies the right bank of the Guadalquivir river estuary, near its mouth in the Atlantic. It is notable for its great variety of biotopes: lagoons, marshes, pine forests, woodland scrub, Mediterranean scrubland, and mobile and fixed dunes. It is the habitat of five species of birds catalogued as being endangered, and has one of the largest populations of herons in the Mediterranean region, serving as a wintering ground for more than half a million aquatic birds. It is also part of one of the existing Iberian lynx breeding centres in Doñana-Aljarafe.

ACTIVITIES

One of the most suitable activities to get to know the Doñana National and Natural Parks is the ATV tour *. There are two possible routes, one that runs through the southern area of the space, through the different landscapes that make up the mosaic that Doñana represents; and a second that heads north, entering the immensity of the marsh.

The possibility of hiking without excessive difficulty is another attraction offered by the environment. The Charco del Acebrón trail that runs through a dense riverside forest that is very well preserved can be highlighted. If you are interested in bird watching, the La Rocina itinerary has observatories from which it is possible to identify a multitude of species that inhabit this enclave. It is also possible to go cycling; From Matalascañas, a bike path starts that runs between pine forests and Mediterranean scrubland and ends in an old beacon tower, already in ruins, called the Pico del Loro. If the tide allows it, you can make the return along the immense beach. Also in the forest town of Cabezudos there is a forest track suitable for cycling that reaches Abalarios, where a landscape of seasonal lagoons combined with strawberry trees, cork oaks and ferns, compensate for the pedaling carried out.
