DESCRIPTION

The El Almendral signposted hiking trail is one of the four linear trails that are offered on the Island of Saltés and that allow us to get up close to the different productive and ecological systems in the Marismas del Odiel Natural Area.

In the case of El Almendral, the visitor can look out along its route to two clearly differentiated natural environments: the first part of the itinerary takes us along the spit into a humanised landscape in which you can see the traditional and extensive use for both equine and ovine livestock.

The dominant vegetation is made up of herbaceous species, especially annuals, among which there are some isolated specimens of trees (stone pine and eucalyptus) which stand out and offer shade to the animals during periods of greater sunshine.

As we advance, the path directs us towards a slight elevation in the terrain where we find the archaeological remains of the ancient Alcazaba that defended the Muslim city of Shaltish (origin of Saltés). It is an archaeological site dated between the 8th and 13th centuries in which it is possible to clearly appreciate the conformation of the walled enclosure, streets and buildings.

Starting from the archaeological site, unfolds a different landscape to from the one that has been seen up to here, opening up a complete panoramic view of the Odiel marsh and the Punta Umbría estuary. At low tide you can enjoy the presence of numerous birds that concentrate here to feed on the great variety of invertebrates that inhabit the flooded lands.

HOW TO GET

From the Huelva-Punta Umbría motorway (A-497), take the exit signposted for Paraje Natural Marismas del Odiel and that does not lead to the Dique de Juan Carlos I motorway. We continue along it and, after crossing the Burro Bridge, after about 1,200 metres you will find the hiking trail start sign and the gate limiting access to vehicles.
