DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This hiking trail is designed around the Jándula River. On this pleasant walk, you can enjoy the contrast between the riverside ecosystems and those of a typical open oak woodlands (dehesas) of the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park.

The hiking trail begins at the iron bridge that crosses the Jándula River, which is also the main entrance to the natural park. A recreational area with barbecues and tables stretches along the right bank of the river. In this section of the hiking trail we can see the characteristic vegetation of the riverside forests of the park such as ash trees, alders, salix eleagnos, oleanders and tamarix gallica, which serve as a refuge for the fauna of this humid area including gray herons, grebes, common moorhens and if we are lucky we may be able to spot an otter. It is also interesting to see the presence of small flocks of azure-winged magpies and iberian magpies that usually approach visitors waiting for food.

In this same section and to our left, in the Solana del Coscojar, we can see, on the hillside, that the vegetation changes notably, with holm oaks appearing along with stone pines, mastics and barberries.

Following the river bank, we arrive at the edge of the Encinarejo reservoir dam. This is a small reservoir, more like a lake, whose purpose is to generate electrical energy.
Below the dam, cross the bridge to cross to the other shore, after a small ascent you reach the town of Encinarejo, built to house the employees who built the dam.

The rabbit is of great importance within the park. In addition to the traditional hunting uses in the area, it supports species of great interest such as the lynx, the imperial eagle and the mongoose.
The deer is the major game species of note in the natural park and the traditional way of hunting is 'montería' or hunting with dogs. The hunting tradition in this part of Sierra Morena comes from ancient times and constitutes a great source of income to the local economy.
