DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The Observatory El Pantalán is accessed at the end of a section of walkway that runs over the water, at the end of which stands the observatory. It is an enclosed construction, built in the style of the traditional wooden, heather and reed huts similar to those used by the old inhabitants of the area. The Observatory is the result of a collaboration project between the Ministry of the Environment and the company Cepsa, which owns the land where the equipment is located and whose objective included the recovery and rehabilitation of the lagoon and its surroundings. Another objective includes the adaptation of access, the creation of a botanical itinerary, the naturalistic signage and publication of informative, environmental education material, with a program of arranged and guided visits mainly aimed at schools and special groups.

The abundance of perilagunar vegetation (poplars, African tamarisk, common reeds, cattails, rushes, nut grass and gorse) and the quality of the waters of the wetland serve as a refuge for a number of species of birdlife: Squacco herons, common coots, marsh harriers, shovelers, ferruginous pochard, mallard, red-crested pochard, little grebe, great crested grebe, cormorant, gray heron, purple heron, cattle egret, black-winged stilt, white stork) are some of the most common species in the area, without being able to rule out the presence of other more emblematic and rare birds such as: black storks, white-headed ducks, purple swamphen, crested coots, black-crowned night heron or osprey. Additionly, it is not uncommon to observe otter specimens that use these waters as refuge and feeding areas.
