EL PORTIL - Ventana del Visitante
The viewpoint, the beginning of the Laguna del Portil trail that runs through the nature reserve, has an unbeatable view of this great freshwater wetland, caused by the accumulation of river water when it encounters a string of coastal sands.
In the foreground, you can see a typical marsh vegetation, formed by cattails, nut grass, tamarisk and reeds. And scanning the horizon, the view is lost in a sea of stone pines. The reserve is very important for fauna, mainly fish and birds. Among the former, there is notably an abundant population of well-established Cobitis paludica. This small fish, endemic to the peninsula is categorised for conservation as vulnerable, and is in decline in many river basins and is very uncommon in still waters.
As for birdlife, as a wetland near the Marismas del Odiel and Doñana, it is of vital importance as a place of passage on migratory routes, as well as a wintering area. Spoonbills, common coots, moorhen, ducks, common pochards and little egrets are just some of the species present.
