DESCRIPTION

This coastal area stretches from the town of Punta Umbria to La Bota beach. Despite its small size, it is an area of great ecological importance, since it is home to one of the few mixed forests of common and Mediterranean juniper conserved on the Andalusian coast.

Along the signposted trail that covers almost its entire length, you will see first-hand the unusual environment. The juniper requires sheltered areas, and is found inland alongside mastic trees, aromatic Mediterranean scrubland, and a number of repopulated pines. Among the expanse of forest, you may hear blue tits, the blackcap or the long-tailed warbler.

Via several footpaths-footbridges, until you reach the beach, you will see the juniper itself. Its root system allows it to root itself in sandy areas, and its fruit, in addition to being a food source for birds, is also used widely in medicine, as a condiment, and as a liqueur flavouring. An abundance of fauna inhabit this area, among which reptiles and birds are the most prominent. The ocellated lizard for example, an endangered species easy to spot due to its large, robust body, and striking yellow and green colours.

Aided by the sea breeze, the tides bring beautiful, diverse seashells of all shapes and sizes to the fine sands of the beach.

The proximity of this natural setting to the town centre and its excellent signposted routes mean that it is an ideal place for both hiking and cycling. You can also take a boat trip around the Punta Umbría estuary in the “Canoa de Punta Umbria”, which once served as transport to the city of Huelva.

The municipality of Punta Umbría, in addition to excellent beaches, has interesting heritage. You can visit El Eucaliptal, a Roman site that contains the archaeological remains of a small village made up of houses, a necropolis, fish salting factory and an area for making “garum” (fermented fish sauce). Also of interest is the 16th century Torre Almenara, a watchtower built under the reign of Felipe III as a means of protecting the coastland from frequent pirate attacks.
