This natural area, in Aroche, was declared a historical site owing to its Moorish castle and 17th century artillery wall. It is set in mid-mountain terrain with natural vegetation in a good state of conservation, formed mainly of holm oak and cork oak groves, alongside heather, rockrose, strawberry trees and kermes oaks. The presence of abundant well-preserved rockrose is important for the nesting of the black vulture, the most prominent species in the area.
It shares its habitat with the red kite, golden eagle, Bonelli´s eagle, Eurasian eagle owl, black stork, short-toed eagle, booted eagle, kaffir swift, common turtledove, Iberian imperial eagle, Egyptian vulture and hobby. This range of birdlife has led it to be declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).
There are otters, there has been the odd sighting of lynx, and wild boars and deer, both of which are readily hunted in Aroche.
