DESCRIPTION

The Cuencas del Rumblar, Guadalén y Guadalmena Special Area of Conservation is located in the province of Jaen, and distributed over 24 municipalities.

The most representative vegetation is the holm oak, found in holm oak meadows, sometimes accompanied by cork oak. In rocky areas, there are arborescent juniper patches, alongside areas of heath and, in some parts, wild olive trees. In terms of river vegetation, riverine forests of ash trees, alder, poplar and willow trees are present.

In some areas, the lack of infrastructures, small village populations, rugged relief and well-preserved habitats make way for the existence of species such as the Iberian imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx. There is also a great diversity of rock-dwelling birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture, Bonelli´s eagle, golden eagle, griffon vulture and peregrine falcon. Amongst the forest birds of prey, the hawk, northern goshawk, buzzard, long-eared owl and tawny owl stand out. In grassland areas on the northeastern side, there is a small population of Cabrera's vole. Common in and around the riverbank, there are species such as the Iberian painted frog, Spanish pond turtle, European pond turtle, otter and Daubenton´s bat.
