This path leads us into el Pozo de los Frailes, a small strategically located village that is flanked by thyme at this entrance. Visiting the village adds a cultural apsect to the landscape already on offer.
From the very beginning of the hiking trail, we can see the hill of Cerro de los Frailes, also known as the hermanicas, and we will walk along the base of the volcanic domes. These are volcanoes that were formed eight million years ago under the sea and the craters were plugged by the solidification of lava. Nowadays, these volcanos constitute the majority of the Cabo de Gata mountain range.
In the surroundings of Los Cortijos Grandes there are numerous waterwheels, inherited from the Muslim culture, used for the extraction of underground water.
There is a clear geological appeal to the route, but it is also interseting in other aspects, such as the biology, the flora and fauna are a continual source of surprises for the attentive observer.
Los Escullos is reached by the AL-4200 road, taking a short turn-off between Rodalquilar and Pozo de los Frailes. The path begins at the crossroads at the entrance of the town, where we must thead away from the town.
