04/06/2024 Observatorio Guadalmesí fuera de servicioSe informa que el observatorio Guadamesí, está fuera de servi...
This observatory is located next to the Torre de Guadalmesí and the river of the same name, a few metres from one of the cliffs of the Cerros del Estrecho, with an approximate height of 25 m. From here we enjoy magnificent views of the Straits of Gibraltar, Ceuta and Africa, with the imposing Jebel Musa rising proudly from across the sea. If we look to the west, we will see abrasion platforms with different layers of sediment that cause the spectacular "flysch" that line the coast, a unique geological formation.
The wind is the meteorological agent that stands out the most in this area. Its direction and intensity conditions and limits, among others, the birds during their migrations across the Strait. The prevailing winds are known as east and west, although those are not exactly the directions in which they blow, each having a southern component.
Therefore, the wind determines where the migratory path leads. With a moderate west or east wind, this is one of the recommended observatories to marvel at the fabulous journey between two continents. Additionally, from this point you can also see sea birds.
This observatory is located on the route of the Colada de la Costa-Huerta Grande trail, so to access it we have to walk the trail starting from Tarifa. Another alternative access route is by car from Cádiz, on the N-340, at Km 96 before reaching Pelayo, follow the signs for Huerta Grande. Exit the road to the right in the car park and follow the dirt road that leads off to the right and runs parallel to the road, first following signs for the Cerro del Tambor trail, heading towards the Guadalmesí river, from where you can see the tower of the same name next to the observatory. From Algeciras, on the N-340 after km 98 we take the service road to the Pelayo neighbourhood that takes us to the other side of the road until we reach the car park, where we follow the instructions given for access from Cádiz.
