The José Antonio Valverde visitor centre owes its name to one of the pioneers in the conservation of the Doñana Protected Area, although it is also known as Cerrado Garrido, a place name for the area.
It is located in the middle of the marsh, in the municipality of Aznalcáza. The architectural typology is similar to the traditional marsh huts. It looks out over a rehabilitated lagoon in which there is a variety of aquatic fauna.
In this centre, it is possible to delve into issues related to the marsh, one of the main ecosystems of the Doñana Natural Area, as well as collect information on the activities organised by companies that operate in the area and on the facilities for public use offered in the area .
It is surprising to see the drastic changes that these wetlands undergo throughout the seasons. At the beginning of autumn, with the first rains, they begin to fill, being filled with water during the winter. But as spring temperatures rise, they begin to dry out and the vegetation colonises the marsh, leaving it completely dry in the summer.
It also shows the typical vegetation of the marsh, the richness of its birdlife and different flora; as well as the transformations and human uses of this land.
Observation points are installed outside the centre for the identification and observation of the fauna that is concentrated in the lagoon.
From the town of Puebla del Río we head towards Isla Mayor for about nine kilometers until we pass the roundabout of Venta del Cruce. We continue a little further on, along the road that we brought from Puebla, to a fork that leads to the Vado de Don Simón. When we reach the Vado, we cross the Guadiamar River and advance along the road that goes to Isla Mayor to leave it before the Vaqueros bridge. Later, we continue along the wall that continues along the western bank of the Guadiamar for ten kilometers, then we turn west and find the visitor center about five kilometers away.
IMPORTANT NOTE: By decision of the CBCasa Bomba Sewage Community, the gates of "Marisma de Pilas", "Bomba Grande" and "Cerrado Garrido" remain closed. Therefore, access to the Visitor Center for private users is from Villamanrique de la Condesa towards Isla Mayor, from La Puebla del Río crossing the Vado de Don Simón, or from Isla Mayor crossing the Vado de Los Vaqueros. Sorry for the disturbances.
