DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

Spits are accumulations of consolidated sands originating from old deposits that emerge above the general level of the marsh. On these small extensions of "dry land", similar to those that appear next to the beaches and coastal sandy areas, a powerful cover of vegetation has developed, dominated by stone pine and maritime juniper.

In the case of La Cascajera, in addition to the accumulation of sand, the action of the tidal dynamics has led to the deposit of the remains of shells and exoskeletons of molluscs and crustaceans (these fragments or 'cascajos' are what gives the place its name). The disintegration of these fragments over time has caused an increase in the levels of limestone in the soil, thus allowing the entry of plant species that require soils with higher calcareous content such as mastic trees, strawberry trees, narrow-leaved mock privet, kermes oak, wild olive trees, rues and white Montpellier cistus, which are the dominant undergrowth.

The hiking trail begins next to the Juan Carlos I Dam road and follows a track that leads through the juniper and pine forest until it reaches the most northwestern end in front of the Punta Umbría estuary where you can enjoy extensive panoramic views of the port and of the forest masses that extend towards the coast line.
