DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The La Duna observatory is located on the Dunas del Odiel lagoon complex, located between the "Nuevo Puerto" port complex and the N442 road (Huelva-Mazagón). It is an observation point built on the highest point of the natural dune that extends to the lee of the coastline.

From this point you have access to a complete panoramic view of the system of interior lagoons that extend along the coastline and that are part of the Las Madres lagoon complex, which is why they share natural values and characteristics. If anything, the lagoons of Dunas del Odiel allow us to better appreciate what the general landscape of the area would be like without the influence of the agricultural transformations that took place in the region in the 1980s; there is an abundance of vegetation around the lagoons (tamarisk, reeds, cattails, rushes, nut grass and broom), absent in other nearby wetlands, and the presence of trees in the perimeter areas (stone pine and red eucalyptus) match the sense of isolation and uniqueness of the space.

These sensations are amplified by the immediate observation of numerous species of birdlife; squacco herons, common coots, shovelers, mallards, red-crested pochards, gadwalls, grebes, great crested grebes, cormorants, gray herons, purple herons, cattle egrets, stilts and white storks are some of the most frequent species in the area, but don't rule out the presence of other more emblematic and rare birds such as black storks, white-headed ducks, swamphen, crested coots, black-crowned night herons and osprey. Additionally, it is not uncommon to spot otters that seek refuge in these waters and feed in these areas.
