A trip to Carcabuey, the heart of the Sierras Subbéticas.
This is a circular trail that starts and returns to the town of Carcabuey, going all the way around one of the mountainous landmarks of the town, La Luca. On its way to Puerto Escaño, the trail passes through one of the internationally important geological sites of interest, the "Ammonitico rosso" facies, where the Jurassic-Cretaceous Stratolimithic boundary can be glimpsed. This is one of the best places in the world to clearly see the contact of materials between both geological periods.
The ascent path offers magnificent views of the entire massif of the Sierra Horconera, the Sierra de los Pollos and the Sierra de Gallinera. When we reach Puerto Escaño we will look out over the northern slope of the Luca, allowing us to see the Lobatejo Peak and beginning a descent that will take us past the recreational area for public use El Castillejo.
El Castillejo combines the natural value of a spring of water that feeds the irrigation channel from which the market gardens of Carcabuey are irrigated, together with the cultural, historical and heritage value of being a cattle resting place located on an old cattle track that takes advantage of this water and the shadows of its old poplars.
