DESCRIPTION

This route offers an insight into the type of forest management carried out in the mountains that it crosses. For several decades, the cork oak forest has suffered two closely linked phenomena which are the main threat facing the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. On the one hand, the process of decay commonly known as “seca" (dry). The second phenomenon consists of the application of intensive and repeated grazing, as well as the overpopulation of herbivores that has led to the almost generalised absence of adequate natural regeneration to guarantee the survival of these masses, with particularly serious effects in the case of the cork oak.

The integrated management model of forestry, livestock and hunting uses can be seen from this trail. Such measures began to be applied in 2001, in Monte Público La Teja, with extremely positive results. Consequently, the practice quickly extended to other public mountains. With the application of this model, the aim is to slow down the advance of the decay processes, by controlling those practices that can weaken the state of the mass. The aim is to achieve a regeneration area of 6,290 hectares.

The trail begins with a short walk through an area of natural regeneration, mainly due to the mass removal of herbivores. It continues along a forest track which deviates towards a plain where there are abundant cork oaks of substantial size surrounded by reforestation pine forests which, in the not too distant future, will be replaced by the original vegetation.

From the trail you can see the A-381 and, more specifically, the Valdespera tunnel, which has two functions: a way of reducing the barrier effect of the road on local fauna and, to integrate the large-scale motorway itself.
