DESCRIPTION

This route ascends from the south of the Montes de Málaga Natural Park and allows us to enjoy of a tour through the pine forest where the old wineries or constructions from the time when the vineyards were exploited are the true protagonists, even if only testimonially since their situation hardly reflects the original construction characteristics and the importance that they actually had in production of oil, raisins and wine. It is precisely one of these wineries that gives its name to the cycle tourism lane, that of Contreras, located in a privileged place next to the western limit of the protected area and from which we will have the opportunity to see beautiful panoramic views of the landscape and the city of Malaga from the natural viewpoint that makes up its location.

We start from the area known as Molinos de San Telmo, a place on the outskirts of Malaga next to the old aqueduct of the same name , in service since 1784, which was designed by the architect José Martín de Aldehuela and of which some infrastructures are still visible. Precisely at the starting point of the cycle route, two flour mills were built under this project, taking advantage of the availability of running water, although ten more were built along the route of the aqueduct, whose economic contributions covered the maintenance costs of This impressive hydraulic work, considered the most important in Spain in the eighteenth century and in the specific case of Malaga, was intended to improve the supply of the city with waters from the Guadalmedina river.

From this point you advance along a forest track that initially leaves the Arroyos de Don Ventura and Hondo on your right, reaching shortly after starting the ruins of Lagar de Picapedreros and the waterfall of the same name. a place that is worth seeing in rainy seasons when the riverbed is in a situation of temporary flood. The lane continues ascending between Aleppo pines, leaving in its vicinity more examples of typical constructions of bygone eras and of which we only perceive remains, as mute witnesses of the hard life to which the ancient inhabitants of these lands were once subjected. . The next winery we pass through, and which we will see on our right, is called Don Ventura, after which we will turn left, 3.9 kilometers from the start, at a crossroads where we separate from the route of the cycling lane Picapedreros-Boticario , with whom we have shared this first section of the route. < br>
Before reaching Contreras, seven kilometers from the beginning of the itinerary, we will leave behind the old Casa de Guijarro or the descent to the riverbed of Arroyo Humaina, a point where the freshness and vegetation will please us especially in warm weather. After leaving Contreras behind, we will continue passing by old wineries such as Tacones, almost hidden in the vegetation, El Conde, 13.4 kilometers from the start of the cycle tourist lane and well visible on our right or the Lagar de Querellanta, which we watch from a small promontory to the left less than a thousand meters from the previous one. Continuing with our progressive ascent, we will cross the Humaina riverbed for the second time, upstream from the first crossing with this stream that we have already left behind, where in the rainy season we will be accompanied by a noisy waterfall while we surely take a break. From here, and less than a kilometer, we will reach the end of the cyclotourist lane, at the junction with the forest track that leads to the Apothecary heading south and to El Cerrado Recreation Area , the El Cerrado signposted trail and Humaina mountain hotel if we continue north.

When you do this itinerary with your bicycle remember that you will have to share it with hikers and also that you may eventually come across a motor vehicle, since the layout of this forest track It is used by the owners of some estates located or adjacent to the Natural Park and for which there is authorization of access, of m anera that it is necessary for you to adopt all the necessary precautions to avoid risks of collision with pedestrians or motor vehicles. For these same safety reasons, you should not exceed the speed of 30 km / h, especially if you make the return itinerary and on the slope, that way you will enjoy the natural space in the appropriate way and without risks for you or for the rest of the users of the vial that you must necessarily share.
