The Laguna de la Paja is almost in the centre of Chiclana de la Frontera, to the southeast of the town centre. It was made a funded Nature Reserve after a collaboration agreement between the current Environmental Department and the Chiclana de la Frontera City Council, due to its environmental and ecological value. This wetland is in a flat area, with a depth of less than half a meter, and seasonal water levels, dependant on rainfall.
In addition to interesting fauna, such as birds, found around the lagoon, it is largely characterised by its vegetation. In the deeper parts, there are large areas of bulrush and Cyperaceae. Sea rush grows up out of the sandy areas that support the pine forest, even in the muddier parts. It is also characterised by indigenous flora such as Armeria gaditana, Eryngium galioides and Frankenia boissieri.
