LAGUNA DE LAS CANTERAS Y EL TEJON - Ventana del Visitante
The Lagunas de las Canteras y el Tejón Nature Reserve, to the northwest of the Bay of Cadiz, is relatively small and shallow. They are largely dependent on rainfall, so they can dry out in the summer months.
The vegetation is typical of these wetland zones: reeds, tamarisk, bulrush, coco grass and reeds. In the areas furthest from the banks, rain-fed crops are in abundance, mainly interspersed with patches of typical Mediterranean vegetation and small eucalyptus repopulations.
The aquatic vegetation that takes over its waters at certain times of the year is more interesting, as is the algae that develop there. The most important part of the reserve is its bird community. It is a place of passage, wintering and nesting grounds for many species, such as the white-headed duck, the common moorhen, the common coot and the common snipe.
