LAGUNA DEL CHINCHE - Ventana del Visitante
This nature reserve is one of Jaen´s few lagoons. It is set in endorheic wetland of around 5 hectares, seasonal and therefore maintained exclusively by rainfall and surface run-off.
It is an area of relative importance for the wintering of some birds, and a stop off point on the migratory routes of others. As a result, the best time to visit the lagoon is in winter. You can find species such as the common pochard, shoveler duck, mallard, and red-crested pochard, among others.
There is limited marsh vegetation in the area; some tamarisk and reeds appear only on the shore of the lagoon. The area is however used heavily for agriculture, and you will see a number of olive groves occupying the slopes of the lagoon. This inevitably leads to erosion and clogging of the basin.
