LAGUNA DEL GOSQUE - Ventana del Visitante
The disappearance of the ancient Sea of Thetis, which once covered what is now Andalusia, created an undulating landscape with an impermeable surface, which gave rise in later times to a multitude of endorheic basins such as the Laguna del Gosque. This wetland area in the Sierra Sur region of Seville, is part of a set of lagoons that stretch from the Lantejuela wetlands in Seville, to Fuente de Piedra and Campillos in Malaga.
This lagoon, unlike other similar ones, has experienced some form of agricultural and recreational use. It is completely surrounded by crops: olive groves, vineyards and both dry and irrigated herbaceous crops. Although in some areas of stony wasteland remains of natural vegetation associated with wild olive trees and kermes oak (rosemary, white rockrose, gorse, etc.) can be found. Reeds, tamarisk, rushes and grassland dominate the edges of the lagoon.
The Gosque lagoon is a pilgrimage site for locals. There are many visitors in the summer, taking advantage of the facilities, such as the sandy beach area.
