One of the most important wetlands in Jaén, Laguna Grande, is quite unique since it was created by human activity. Contrary to most wetlands, here the transformation of the territory by man caused an alteration in the environmental conditions that, instead of impoverishing it, gave it greater diversity. This pool of water broke the monotony of the extensive fields of crops and was, therefore, a new space ready to be colonised by various species.
The Laguna Grande information point is located in the vicinity of the lagoon, and its main objective is simply to bring the visitor closer to the natural values of this place. There is information about the natural and cultural values of the natural area. For this, a background is provided about the origin of the lagoon, which is also closely linked to the history of the Hacienda Laguna Grande. The vegetation, typical of wetlands, gives shelter to numerous species, among which the community of aquatic birds stands out, the swamphen being the most emblematic species in this protected area. The most important didactic contents are the lagoon as an ecosystem, birds and their relationship with the environment and olive oil.
The information point is located in the Cortijo de la Laguna, which used to have rooms of residence for the Marqués de la Laguna, and the mill, where olive oil was extracted. This farmhouse currently houses the La Laguna Hospitality School and an Oil Museum.
Located in the Hacienda la Laguna Tourist Complex. From the town of Puente del Obispo, leave at exit 19 of the A-316 road and head along the path of the lagoon, after travelling dor 1,900 m you will arrive at the information point.
