LAGUNAS DE ARCHIDONA - Ventana del Visitante
The Lagunas de Archidona Nature Reserve is one of the few wetland areas in eastern Andalusia. The lagoon complex is formed of two lagoons of considerable size, whose waters are saline and rich in sulfates.
To the north is Laguna Grande, which boasts virtually crystalline water year round, almost devoid of underwater vegetation. To the south is Laguna Chica, with cloudier water and prone to drying up in the summer. Both are surrounded by a dense belt of reeds that makes access to the shore difficult.
The surrounding hilly landscape is credited for the ecological value of the area, creating holes which in turn form wet, green meadows, paving the way for well-preserved oak forests. Here there is a mix of Portuguese oaks, hawthorn, rose hip, and retama broom bushes. The fauna is mostly represented by aquatic birds, with a great number of ducks among many other species.
