DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the Campanillas River Valley and Villanueva de la Concepción, as well as the mountainous terrain leading to the Malaga coast.

In the dinosaur era, the whole view that can be enjoyed from here remained submerged under the Sea of Tethys. This sea, the future Mediterranean, spanned from the Iberian Plateau to the current Sierra Nevada. In it, the carbonate skeletons of marine animals settled, until the limestone rocks that today make up El Torcal originated.

It was much later, during the alpine folding, when the enormous thrust of the African plate on the Iberian plate compressed, deformed and fractured the materials until they emerged 1 kilometre above sea level. Even to this day the process continues.

But it was the persistent combined action of water, ice and wind, dissolving and eroding limestone rocks more than marl and clays, that produced this fanciful pattern: the karst landscape. The water circulated through the fissures that had been created, until it met waterproof materials and resurfaced like springs.

Below, in the green valley, the dragging of the eroded materials allowed fertile soil to develop, with crops, grasslands and natural vegetation appearing.
