Marisma de El Burro is located entirely within the Odiel Marshes, to the south, precisely at the confluence of the Odiel river with the Burro Chico channel and the Carlota estuary. It is part of a set of tidal marshes associated with the mouths of the Tinto and Odiel rivers, and stands out for its rich vegetation (tamarisk, Phoenicean juniper, rockrose, mastic trees, kermes oak, sea-blite and even stone pine) and also for its variety in aquatic birds.
Above all, its most representative species is the spoonbill, with a breeding colony that accounts for 30% of the European population. The presence of the grey heron is also significant, nesting in the lower vegetation, as well as the purple heron, marsh harrier and osprey. There is an endemic species of butterfly, the Malacosoma laurae.
The area, due to the fact that it belongs to the Marismas del Odiel Natural Park, is a Biosphere Reserve, and is also included as a wetland in the Ramsar Agreement, has been declared a SPA Zone and is proposed as being a Site of Community Interest (for its water regime). It also boasts the best preserved marsh ecosystems, next to the Isla de Enmedio Nature Reserve.
