DESCRIPTION

The las Marismas de San Miguel hiking trail is part of the set of facilities dedicated to enhancing the coastal wetlands of the province of Huelva. It is a path that runs perpendicular to the marsh from the spit of the Cabezos del Terrón until it reaches the very edge of the Estero del Carbón. From here it runs parallel to the Estero del Carbón until, after crossing three channels that feed the estuary, it heads back towards the spit, ending its journey where it joins up with the Camino del Lancón again.

The route along the path allows the visitor to enter a landscape surrounded channels of water that change their appearance with the high and low tides. In this tidal area we find numerous species of flora adapted to saline environments such as: arthrocnemum macrostachyum, spartina, limoneo and salicornia. They are plants that, in addition to their tolerance to salt (halophilic species), are characterised by withstanding changes in water levels, and can even tolerate brief periods of complete flooding. Other less tolerant species such as the Montpellier cistus and broom are confined to the few areas that remain permanently above the high tide.

Linked to these systems, a rich bird fauna can be observed, mainly dominated by species such as stilts, avocets, various plovers, oystercatchers, tringas, collared pratincoles, dunlins and spoonbills. Typical species of the sea coast such as cormorants, gull-billed terns and different species of gulls can also be frequently observed.

In addition to the natural and scenic values of the environment, this path stands out for the presence of footbridges that serve to bridge the crossing of the three channels that cross it. They are three laminated wood structures that are 37, 22 and 17 metres long , designed in a single span without intermediate supports. Due to its dimensions and design, footbridge No. 1 stands out, and it is the first you cross if accessed from the entrance closest to el Rompido. It consists of an arched bridge, supported on the abutments placed at both ends, it crosses the main channel over the marsh at a height of 3 metres above the high tide water level.

HOW TO GET

Accessed from El Rompido, a town that is accessed from the HV-4111 road that connects Punta Umbría with Cartaya. From El Rompido head towards Cartaya, once you have passed a petrol station on the right, take the exit off to the left at the next roundabout towards Camino del Lancón. This is an unpaved public road that crosses a golf course and several orange groves until it ends on the banks of the Río Piedras, in front of the Puerto de El Terrón. Before this point, after passing the last patch of orange trees, to the right of the path, you will find the sign for the beginning of our path.
