DESCRIPTION

The marshes of the Barbate River, which were drained for agricultural purposes in the 1960s, have now been re-flooded to create small permanent tidal lagoons, with ornithological observatories in the vicinity where you can enjoy the great biodiversity they contain. These internationally renowned wetlands are included in the List of RAMSAR Wetlands and have been declared Special Protection Areas for Birds due to their important value as a strategic point on the migratory routes of birds between the European and African continents. Numerous species of aquatic birds, during their migratory passage, use these places as resting, feeding and nesting areas.

Grey herons, egrets, little terns, terns, plovers, gulls, black-tailed godwits, ospreys and cormorants are common in the canyons. The elevated areas that are not waterlogged are ideal as nesting sites for birds such as the canastera or the kentish plover. In the areas of saline steppe, the marsh terrapin abounds, while the waterlogged grasslands are frequented by stilts, pink flamingoes, mallards, coots, shoveler ducks and even the odd little grebe, and among the reeds, little bitterns.

OBSERVATIONS:

We recommend a visit to the Information Point of the Natural Park, located in the Barbate Marina.

Do not forget to bring your dogs on a leash.

Don't forget mosquito repellent, sun protection, cap and water, there are no shadows along the route.
