DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The route of the signposted itinerary coincides, from start to finish, with the road that connects with the Arenas Príncipe Juan Carlos I Containment Dike.

Located in the south of the province of Huelva, at the confluence of the mouths of the rivers Tinto and Odiel, the meeting of fresh and salt waters has given rise to a complex of marshes influenced by the tides, known as the Odiel Marshes. In this place the continuous supply of sediments and the force of the tides have generated islands separated by extensive arms of water such as the Isla de Enmedio, the Isla de Saltés and the Isla de Bacuta located to the south of the enclave.

This cycle path connects Aljaraque and the city of Huelva with the Anastasio Senra Visitor Centre, crossing an ecosystem anthropised by the salt extraction work, but which stands out for its environmental values. It is striking for its great horizontality, the smell of saltpetre, the feel of the sea breeze and the spectacular arrival of hundreds of birds that find in this marshland an ideal place to feed and in many cases a safe environment in which to nest. It is a truly evocative landscape where the presence of flamingos is constant throughout the year and a large number of protected bird species are easy to observe, particularly waders.

As for the flora, the saline environment determines the predominance of plant species resistant to high salt concentrations, known as halophilic plants. An example of these is the salicornia or spartina densiflora, a real structuring element of the ecology and landscape of large areas of marshland.

This is a newly paved route, which is quite safe due to the protective barriers which separate it from the road. At the end of the route there is a lagoon where you can see numerous birds and you can visit the CREA-CEGMA and the Visitor Centre of the Marismas del Odiel Natural Park.

This cycle path allows you to enjoy the magnificent views of the estuary where the metal docks built to load the minerals that arrived on the railway from the mining basin stand out. In addition, in the vicinity we find the remains of Roman fish salting ponds and the archaeological site of Salthish, on the island of Saltés; this is an important city that was the capital of the Taifa kingdom of the Baikríes in the 10th and 11th centuries.
