At the mouth of the Palmones River, a marshland space rests on top of the natural materials deposited there over time. The space is made up of three very differing areas: a series of dunes (nearly a kilometre in length; marshland and a multitude of channels and seashore wells; and a waterlogged area, representative of the remainder of dried-up marsh from times gone by.
The most unique thing about Palmones, in comparison to other wetlands in the region, is its Mediterranean estuary of Atlantic characteristics. Its muds are covered in a tapestry of plant species such as reeds, salicornias and rushes, all highly adapted to high salt concentrations.
The geographical location is ideal for birdlife, as it greets the main front on their intercontinental, migrational journey. There are more than 350 species registered, with Kentish plovers, dunlins and herons in abundance.
