PEÑA DE SAN SIXTO - Ventana del Visitante
A linear return route that begins at the exit of the town of Encinasola in a southeasterly direction, following the traditional path to Cumbres de San Bartolomé. The first section crosses the agricultural border of Encinasola located on a kind of plateau where rainfed crops are abundant: olive groves and cereals. As we go forward and move away from the town, the olive tree is replaced by the holm oak, maintaining the same multifunctional productive system typical of the open oak woodlands (dehesas), accompanied by pyrutanos and some broom.
After leaving the cultivated fields, we enter a much more rugged area, characterised by a stony landscape with little cover from the trees. The dominant vegetation is composed of sparse species adapted to situations of scarce soil and strong insolation (rockrose, gorse, phlomis purpureas, lavender, daphne gnidium, rosemary, kermes oak and broom). In this section, the path follows a sinuous downward path until it reaches the Arroyo del Caño where the landscape becomes much more pleasant and the riverside vegetation becomes much more noticeable.
The path fords the stream thanks to a crossing. On the other side we find a wooded area made up of a large eucalyptus plantation. Following the course of the riverbed, the path ends in a grassy area in front of the Arroyo del Sillo from where you can see the crest of the Peña de San Sixto. It is a unique elevation made up of quartzites that's hardness compared to the surrounding material (sandstone) has made it possible to resist the general erosion that has characterised the geological evolution of the rest of the region.
If you want to continue enjoying the surroundings of this mountain town, we encourage you to also do the Puente de los Cabriles bridge trail , an original construction from the 15th century.
