The town of Aroche, declared a historical site on account of its Moorish castle and 17th century artillery wall, is set in a mountainous area with well-preserved natural vegetation, made up primarily of holm oak and cork oak forests, alongside heather, rockrose, strawberry trees and kermes oaks. The presence of abundant, well-preserved rockrose is fundamental for the nesting of black vultures, the most commonly sighted bird in the area.
However, it is also possible to see other birds such as the red kite, golden eagle, Bonelli´s eagle, Eurasian eagle owl, black stork, short-toed eagle, booted eagle, kaffir swift, common turtledove, Iberian imperial eagle, Egyptian vulture and hobby. It has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) owing to its many species.
Lynx have also been sighted, alongside otters and wild boars, which, as well as deer, are commonly hunted in Aroche.
