The type of rock outcrops found here, at Punta de San Cristóbal, are not commonly found on the Mediterranean coast. These three crags are composed of hard, dark-coloured rock. Located right in the town of Almuñecar they protrude out into the sea, as if trying to part its waters.
"Peñón de Fuera" (Distant Crag) is, as its name suggests, the one furthest from the coast. In front of it is "Peñón de Enmedio" (Middle Crag), separated by water from the other two. Lastly, "Peñón del Santo" (Saint's Crag), is right on Almuñécar beach, dividing it into two parts: Puerta del Mar Beach and San Cristóbal Beach. Saint's Crag is the largest of the three, reaching approximately 30 metres of height. Ramps and gardens lead you to its highest point, where you will find the Saint's Cross and a viewpoint with stunning views of the sea, the town and the surrounding mountains.
This area has other attractions for visitors such as the Botanical-Archaeological Park; home to the remains of one of the largest fish-salting factories built by the Phoenicians in the Mediterranean. Also interesting is the Roman aqueduct and San Miguel castle, built by the Moors over the remains of a Roman fortress. It was used as a place to guard their treasures, making it one of the most frequently besieged castles on these coasts. The coastal watchtowers built to protect against enemy attacks from the sea also date from the same period.
