PUNTA DE TRAFALGAR - Ventana del Visitante
The Punta de Trafalgar area is located in Barbate, Cadiz, with a large part of its surface area being made up of marine environment. The area is approximately 665 hectares, 551 of which are marine (83% of the surface), and 114 terrestrial.
The terrestrial part is essentially a small islet of sandstone that lies between the Conil and Barbate inlets. It joins the coast via a double “tombolo”, which is composed of relatively recent, loose sands; forming a coastal bar. It is characterised by a dune system, ranging from white dunes to more stabilised dunes. The most significant land use is therefore that which is associated with the dune system. Approximately 68 hectares (60%) of the land area is represented by shrub and herbaceous formations (though without woodland), of juniper and Spanish juniper, with the remaining hectares consisting of open spaces with little vegetation, characteristic of the dunes closest to the coast. Only in the northeast is there woodland, consisting of scrubland and trees.
