This coastal bar, located in the municipality of San Fernando, constitutes a line of virgin dunes, emerged from the Atlantic in front of the Sancti Petri Marshes. Together with the undoubted landscape value of the environment, dominated by pipes, islets and the sea of the Guadalete estuary, this Natural Monument is one more example of the complex formation of the CÁDIZ coast.

The area, famous for its beaches and marshes, is the result of the last geological episodes in the region, when sedimentation filled the estuary. Later, the waves over the sediments formed barriers such as the Boquerón, which enclosed the marshes and accentuated their loss of depth. The subsequent retreat from the sea emerged this coastal bar, being the wind and the tide who finished shaping the current landscape.

Life is concentrated in balance at this confluence of river, sea and land. A large number of fish, molluscs and crabs coexist in the pipes, which are still traditionally fished. The place is ideal for birds, which feed or rest during their migrations, finding shorebirds such as correlimos or black-winged stilt and marine such as seagulls. These birds are visible on boat trips through the stream, along with egrets, grey herons and flamingos. On the dune sands, the vegetation is made up of barley and white broom and in the marshes there are other species adapted to high salinity such as salty, sapinas, armajos and salty grass.

You can get to know this Natural Monument by walking along the Punta del Boquerón Trail and from one of the stops to contemplate the Castle of Sancti-Petri. This construction, built on successive Phoenician and Roman temples, has been declared a Cultural Property, together with the ruins of the Urrutia Battery. La Punta del Boquerón is also an enclave of the Cadiz Bay appreciated by anglers given the tranquility of the landscape and the beautiful sunsets behind the castle.
