DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The cycle track begins in a place called El Eucaliptal, near the archaeological site of the same name and is close to the old forest house of La Peguera. It starts off on a pedestrian route constructed over the natural terrain of sands.

The route runs noticeably parallel to the Canal de las Madres, on one side of the track, with the pine forest of the Punta Umbría mountain opening up on the other side. The influence that the marsh has on the surrounding vegetation can be seen in the form of plant species typically found in saline environments, especially on some inlets that even reach the track. At these points, and in order to avoid flooding and consequent deterioration of the structure, the cycle track is elevated over the natural terrain by using wooden floorboards raised high above the ground. In these areas there are specimens of purslane, salt marshes, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and lemon trees that occupy the surfaces that flooded by high tides. Surrounding them, the pine forest occupies the arboreal domain of the highest areas, with hardly any accompaniment of specimens of sub-serial scrub (though there are some examples of Montpellier cistus rockrose, brooms and retama brooms).

The route also runs parallel to the fence that delimits the Marismas del Odiel Natural Area, where the facilities of the Salinas del Astur are located, a complex which is dedicated to aquaculture production in the estuaries of the old salt marshes, as well as to the development of educational activities for environmental and nature tourism. After passing the entrance to the Salinas del Astur, the cycle route continues westwards, getting deeper and deeper into the pine forest until it ends going south at the junction with the Salinas del Astur cycle route to Pinos del Mar.

HOW TO GET

The Polideportivo Municipal sports centre can be accessed from Punta Umbría, and it is from here that cyclists can start a section of the Ayuntamiento (City Council) cycle route that leads to El Eucaliptal, which is where the cycle route begins. From Huelva, the easiest access is considered to be from the one located in the vicinity of the Puntan Umbría EDAR (WWTP). It can be reached via the A-5050, which runs parallel to the Punta Umbría motorway, from the A-5051 roundabout located near the Camping de La Bota campsite.
