The Rio Guadalquivir-Middle Section Special Area of Conservation is located mostly in the province of Cordoba, and also in the provinces of Jaen and Seville.
The vegetation is primarily made up of poplars, and in well preserved areas it is still possible to find white willow and / or tamarisks. Weeping willow dominates some of the banks.
Otters are the main mammal here, alongside amphibians, reptiles, dragonfly species and a number of fish, such as the freshwater blenny, a species registered as vulnerable by the Andalusian Catalogue of Threatened Species.
Bird-wise, the little egret, kingfisher, black stork, purple heron and little bittern stand out. At the southern end, birds such as the Montagu´s harrier, black-bellied sandgrouse and the Egyptian vulture can be found.
