DESCRIPTION

This is a mid-mountain area northwest of the city of Almeria. It is made up of a “horst” which is bordered by the depression of the land and the Tabernas Desert in the north, and the Valle Bajo de Andarax and Campo de Níjar in the south. Its relief, which is hilly with rugged slopes, is largely the result of erosion, and occasionally sub-vertical walls form. It is also a result of a geology comprising schist and quartzite.

Vegetation-wise, there are a great deal of holm oaks. They stand as a relic to the vegetation that, in other times and climate conditions, must have covered a vast area of the Almerian countryside. Nowadays these oaks can be found on this mountainous terrain where they have taken refuge from the extreme arid conditions that surround fascinating

Bird-wise, there are many communities of birds of prey with protected species such as Bonelli´s eagle, the golden eagle, lesser kestrel, peregrine falcon and Eurasian eagle owl. Foxes, genets and weasels also inhabit the area. The area has been awarded SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) status by the European Union as a result of the diverse species it is home to.

Here one can truly immerse themselves in what is one of the most exuberant landscapes in Almeria, taking in the sounds of the wildlife whilst enjoying the tranquility of the nearby Tabernas Desert.
