SIERRA DE ANDÚJAR - Ventana del Visitante
The Sierra de Andújar Natural Park is an example of the typical undulating ridge landscape of the Sierra Morena Mountains. There are a large number of emblematic endangered species that take refuge here, between the Mediterranean mountains and the meadows in the centre of the park, the rugged mountains of the north and the dense pine woods of the south.
The mid-mountain landscape that characterises this area has the largest areas of natural vegetation in the Sierra Morena Mountains. The most characteristic species are holm oak and cork in the meadows, while the Portuguese oak can be found higher up where there is greater rainfall. Amidst this vegetation we should mention the unusual rounded forms of granite, locally known as "bolos". This material is used for a range of things, including troughs for livestock. Some of the farms in the park home fighting bulls that can be seen drinking from fascinating Walkers exploring the Junquillo Trail will see how these farms contribute to the huge diversity of the area. Along the way there is contrast in the landscape, between livestock farms and hunting estates, where dense scrubland provides shelter for boar, deer, roe deer and other animals characteristic of the area.
The long, impressive list of animals that live in the nature park is one of its great attractions. It includes endangered species such as the Iberian lynx - this is home to the world's largest community - and the wolf - Andalucia's main community is found here. It is also relatively easy to see Iberian imperial eagles and other large birds of prey such as the golden eagle and black vulture on the Jabalí-Encinarejo trail. At the end of the route, the Encinarejo reservoir has much to offer, both in terms of its beautiful setting and also on account of the Recreational Areas around it. A pleasant walk along the Jándula River, in the shade of its luxuriant riverine forest, rounds off the options here.
The Virgen de la Cabeza Sanctuary is right in the heart of the nature park and is the site of an annual pilgrimage in honour of the patron saint of hunters. Andújar is a hunting hub, and has workshops specialising in hunting-related crafts. As one would expect, the cuisine is closely associated with game. Baños-style deer and Andujar-style quail are two examples. Honey and associated Denomination of Origin products are also traditionally prepared here.
Towns and villages in the park contain valuable architectural heritage, well worth visiting. A visit to Burgalimar Castle, in the village of Baños de la Encina is also recommended - one of the oldest in Europe. Other interesting architecture is the Town Hall in Villanueva de la Reina, as well as Los Coello Palace and the Roman Bridge in Andújar. The renowned spa in Marmolejo specialises in medicinal waters for a range of ailments.

The Sierra de Andújar Natural Park is ideal for hiking. There are a number of trails that show off one of the best preserved Mediterranean forests on the peninsula. The Jabalí-Encinarejo and Sanctuary trails do just that. These routes are increasingly more exciting when you consider that you might even see an Iberian imperial eagle or black vulture.
These mountains are one of the last strongholds of numerous endangered species, making this natural park an ideal environment for observing fauna. Routes such as Los Escoriales are particularly good for cyclists, and for seeing the “bellowing” of the deer in autumn.
Its reservoirs, especially Encinarejo, are good for water sports. A relaxing canoe ride * is one of the options.
* Activities that require authorisation from the Natural Park is (only in operation from December 1st to August 31st).
