DESCRIPTION

The Sierra de Huétor Natural Park is in the centre of the province of Granada, and just 20 kilometres from the capital. It is made up of a series of medium-height mountain ranges, where narrow ravines, streams, cliffs and limestone rock all come together to form a complex relief. The limestone nature of the terrain means that there are a number of karst formations. Inside them, water seeps deep down into the heart of the mountain, accumulating to produce galleries and caves such as Cueva del Agua. It subsequently emerges via springs like the one at Fuente Grande. This spring water was channelled as early as Moorish times along conduits known as "acequias" to supply the famous Albaicín neighbourhood in Granada. These mountains are crossed by the Darro and Fardes river basins. The Fardes is home to an abundance of trout and is a favourite haunt for angling enthusiasts.

On top of being very accessible, this natural park has a variety of forest trails, contributing to it being one of the most visited natural areas in Granada.

A mosaic of pine forests, holm oaks, Portuguese oaks, scrubland areas and riverside forests constitutes an important shelter for a great variety of species. Unusual native plant and animal species are conserved here, as well as threatened species such as the ibex and the golden eagle.

Besides its nature appeal, the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park has many other attractions owing to its rich historical-cultural past. Primarily the Moorish influence and the unique mountain gastronomy of the surrounding towns: Alfacar, Beas de Granada, Cogollos Vega, Diezma, Huétor Santillán, Nívar and Víznar.

Moorish cultural legacy can be seen in the area's "alquerías" (farmsteads), irrigation channels, and in the Moorish baths at Cogollos de Vegas, while in the village of Víznar you can visit the neo-classical Palace of El Cuzco, which has been declared a National Monument. Diezma has a superb view of Sierra Nevada and offers photography enthusiasts the chance to take some fine panoramic shots of the surrounding mountains. There are also birds of prey such as the golden eagle, immediately identifiable for its majestic, soaring flight. To restore your strength we suggest trying the local cuisine, which includes traditional Alfacar bread, delicious cod with “alimoje” sauce and the famous "gachas" (a type of oatmeal porridge) with honey.

A nod to recent history are the numerous trenches built during the Spanish Civil War, authentic natural viewpoints from which you can see the best views of the area.

ACTIVITIES

Due to its proximity to the city, the Sierra de Huétor has always been a traditional place for hiking for the people of Granada. You can walk the signposted trail Cañada del Sereno that crosses the diversity of landscapes that this Natural Park offers and also shows an excellent panoramic view of Sierra Nevada. If you are interested in the recent history of our country, on the Cerro del Maúllo trail you will see the trenches built to defend the city during the Civil War.

Other possible activities is climbing. A suitable place for this sport is the port of Alfacar *. You can also go paragliding in this area *. You will have to arm yourself with courage, since, to see this mountain landscape and the beautiful city of Granada from a bird's eye view, you will have to jump into the void from the high peaks.

You can also cycle through the existing forest tracks. This is an excellent way to get to know this natural protected area in a broader way.

Horseback riding from Prado Negro is another of the frequent activities in the Natural Park. And finally, sheltered at night and taking advantage of the absence of light pollution, you can observe the stars in the vicinity of the Puerto Lobo Visitor Centre.
